PREFACE
Environment Council underwent intensive activity, in 2004, mostly as regards population's awareness into environmental issues.
Concerning Council's organization and running, one staff has been hired; total number of staffs had been increased up to 22.
Financial resources endowment (Private Budget and PIDDA) increased 17.9%, comparing to 2003 (see Table 4).
The amount of complaints coped by Environment Council has been increasing 32% in 2004, in comparison with the previous year.
In the year under review, not only the number of activities increased dramatically but also the number of citizens participating in those activities.
Considering the strong population involvement in the disclosure ceremony of Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) candidacy to the prize "Champions of the Earth", (held at the end of 2003), investment has been reinforced on awareness activities and environmental education promotion. Various activities designed for promoting this candidacy were planned and carried out, culminating in the activity "Environmental Week", in which 28,000 citizens participated. Annual environmental celebrations (Earth Day, World Environment Day, and so on) have been tackled by Environment Council through various relevant activities.
National and regional level cooperation, and contacts are of great importance; moreover, they are significant for improving our environment. At regional level, cooperation and contacts incremented dramatically and reached their climax through the signing of the "Protocol for Regional Cooperation in the Pan-Pearl River Delta", in 2004. A national level cooperation was also reinforced by signing a "Memorandum for understanding and cooperation on hazardous waste management", between Environment Council and the Institute for Environmental Science, from the State Environmental Protection Administration of China.
One of the responsibilities of Environment Council is to compile annually the Report on the State of the Environment of Macao (MSAR) as well as the Activities Report of Environment Council. Lotus magazine was also published; and other multimedia materials such as two documentaries about Macao and one environmental series CD.
The Activities Report of Environment Council let us review and evaluate the initial planning of the year, has been accomplished along the year, identify weaknesses, consider future plans and how those plans will be implemented. It informs all interested parties on activities, working areas, Environment Council's responsibilities and the implementation of those activities.
