ACTIVITIES IN ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS AND EDUCATION
One of the important functions of the Environment Council is to increase citizens' awareness and promote environmental education.
The various propaganda activities in 2005 were carried out according to this direction and aiming to encourage citizens to protect the environment and enhance their awareness in environmental protection, especially in preserving natural resources. The following are the propaganda activities organized by Environmental Council:
Environmental Photo Exhibition on Tour on School
From January 14 to May 30, 2005, Environment Council had held the Environmental Photo Exhibition in different secondary schools in Macao, in order to enhance students' knowledge on the environment state in Macao SAR and how did Macao react to the challenges on environmental protection problems. There were totally 13,400 students attended the exhibitions.
 
 Competition of Green Community
The activities were jointly held in March and April 2005 by Environment Council and the General Union of Macao Residents' Association. There were totally 1,500 residents in 10 communities participated in the activities. From the activities the environmental protection spirit in communities was advocated.
Earth Day
Earth Day 2005 - Exhibition on our planet protection
Environment Council together with co-organizers General Association for Macao Labourers and Macao Education Association held the "Earth Day 2005 - Exhibition on our planet protection" from 22nd April to 29th April, 2005 in Campo dos Oper坔rios facilities at Portas do Cerco. The objective of the exhibition was to arouse citizen's awareness in the environmental problems faced by the whole world, such as greenhouse effect, depletion of the ozone layer depletion, biodiversity decline, air pollution, acid rain problem, deforestation, desertification, water resources crisis, sea pollution, urban waste pollution and toxic chemical pollution. With the knowledge of the problems, citizens were expected to take part personally in taking responsive action to protect the environment in daily life. The prize giving ceremony for the "Caring our Planet" essay contest was also conducted during the exhibition.
Essay Contest on "Caring our Planet"
Environment Council held the essay contest on "Caring our Planet" from February to March 2005. There were totally 156 students participated in the contest. All essays were in letter format with the contents mainly calling upon their relatives and people in the community to protect the planet.
Video Production Contest on "The Environmental Protection"
From March to May 2005 the Environment Council and the Audio-visual Association CUT jointly launched the Video Production Contest on "The Environmental Protection". It is intended to promote environmental knowledge and the increase of public awareness on the importance of environmental protection and conservation through this contest. The competition attracted 32 participants.
Earth Day -Workshop for the Treatment and Disposal of Solid Urban Waste
With a rapid economic and social development, urbanization and increasing consumption, all cities are facing pressure and challenges from the increasing amount of all sorts of wastes such as municipal waste, construction waste, medical waste and hazardous waste.
The workshop on the treatment and disposal of urban solid waste, organized by the Environment Council with the collaboration of Macao Productivity and Technology Transfer Center, University of Macao and Macao Environmental Protection Industries association, had taken place in Macao Polytechnic Institute, from 22nd to 23rd of April in 2005.This workshop aimed to facilitate the debate and exchange of information of the urban solid waste, planning, disposal and treatment practices across various regions.
The Environment Council had invited 23 speakers from Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Germany, France and Japan, to discuss the followings: urban waste strategy and management; urban hazardous waste safe treatment; urban organic waste treatment; urban construction waste treatment; technological innovation and urban waste incineration process as well as safe treatment of urban waste incineration ashes.
Workshop participants were mostly managers and technicians from governmental departments and environmental enterprises as well as researchers from institutes. Apart from the workshop, a project / business matching section was hosted. There were around 170 persons participated in the exchange activity.
Promotional Activities on Earth Protection
This series of activities were held twice:
First activity was jointly held by Environment Council and Macao Women's Association in Senado Square on 30th of April, the main target participants were families (parents and children), there were 200 citizens participated in the activity and they were expected to assimilate the importance of environmental protection in the joyful atmosphere through the activity.
The second activity was held in the square next to Jardim da Cidade das Flores in Taipa jointly by the Environment Council and the General Union of Macao Residents' Association on 30th July. The message of protecting the earth was continuously publicized to citizens and their environmental protection awareness was enhanced through different games. There were totally 200 participants in this activity. Prize giving ceremony on Competition of Green Community and Video Production Contest on "The Environmental Protection" was also conducted during the activity.
In these two activities, the awareness of caring the earth was instilled to citizens through different kinds of propaganda modes including dramas, dances, songs sung by local singers and exciting games. The activity field was filled with warm atmosphere. Stall games and exhibition were also arranged in the activity. The exhibition introduced the ten major problems, which the world currently facing.
World Environment Day
Just as in the past, Environment Council celebrated the "World Environment Day" with the Macao, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan and Zhongshan Joint Action Campaign continuously held in 2005; the subject of the campaign was "Green Cities Plan for the Planet".
In Macao, Environment Council held three activities:
"Green City Physical Competition Activity" - Green Cities, Plan for the Planet!
"Green City Physical Competition Activity" was held on 5th of June, in Tap Seak Gymnasium with co-organizers of General Union for Macao residents' Association, General association for Macao labourers, Macao Women's Association, Macao Chong Wa Students' Association, Macao Scouts' Association, Macao Flying Eagle.
The content of the activity was very rich, including the physical competition of fully support environmental protection, collective environment puzzle and green city Questions and Answers contest. There were also additional items like celebrating the environmental protection (lion dance show), environmental protection mini drama, music performance and environmental protection songs sung by local singers. The purpose was to publicize the message of building a green city in a relaxing and funny atmosphere. Representatives of Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Dongguan and Zhongshan attended the activity upon invitation.
"Preserve our natural resources. Use ecological bags when shopping" Promotional Activity
In addition, with support by the above co-organizers and 30 participated merchants, Environment Council organized the "Preserve our natural resources. Use ecological bags when shopping" Promotional Activity from 5th of June to 15th of July to encourage citizens to bring their own shopping bag for shopping, thus reducing the use of plastic bags. Participating citizens who brought their own shopping bags for shopping on the abovementioned period would have one stamp on the lucky draw ticket. When 4 stamps on the ticket were collected, the lucky draw would be entitled. 1,100 Citizens participated in this activity.
Televoting "Environmental Protection Contest"
Meanwhile, Environment Council also broadcast the televoting "Environmental Protection Contest" on Radio Macao from 5th to 17th of June. Environmental protection related questions were broadcasted daily during that period. Citizens knowing the answer can call to give answers and be entitled to great lucky draw if the answer was correct. 1,381 Citizens participated in this activity.
Environmental Bicycle Tour
Just as in the past, in order to enhance the environmental awareness of the Macao citizens, the Environment Council and the General Association for Macao Labourers jointly organized the "Environmental Bicycle Tour" on 3rd of July, and around 100 persons participated in this activity. During the activity, organizers explained the operation of the incinerator in Taipa and the sewage plant to the participants so that they would more understand the environmental protection condition and infrastructure in Macao.
Exhibition on Environment Industry Cooperation in the Pan Pearl River Delta and The 6th (Guangzhou) International Environmental Protection Exhibition
The exhibition was held from 31st of August to 3rd of September and was one of the important cooperative items in environmental protection industry aspect of Pan-Pearl River Delta Regional Environmental Protection cooperation. As one of the organizers, and with the Macao Environmental Protection Industries Association as the co-organizer, Environment Council organized an exhibition team with 10 participating organizations. The purpose of the exhibition was to enhance the development of Macao environmental protection industry, encourage the regional cooperation and drive Macao to gradually develop to be the liaison platform and cooperation bridge of China and the world environmental industry, especially the small and medium enterprises.
The Mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Environment Forum - Environmental Protection Technology and Industry
In order to promote the cooperation and exchange in environmental industry, and deepen participants' understanding of current condition and development trend of the environmental protection, as well as driving the environmental protection industry development and the trade and commerce dealings in the Mainland, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, Environment Council of Macao SAR and Chinese Society for Environmental Services jointly organized the "The Mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Environment Forum - Environmental Protection Technology and Industry" in Macao Tower Convention & Entertainment Centre from November 10 to 11, 2005. The subject of the forum was environmental technology and Industry.
Indoor Air Quality Promotion Activity
As the indoor air quality affected building users' health significantly, and the international community also gradually paid attention to this issue, Environment Council, Institute for Development and Quality, Macao, and The Macao Institute of Engineers co-organized the "Indoor Air Quality Promotion Activity" from 25th of November to 9th of December, and made use of this activity to enhance citizen's knowledge in air quality.
Summer Course for Teachers 2005
Environment Council and Education and Youth Affairs Bureau had co-organized Summer Course for Teachers for five years consecutively. The 2005 course held from 4th to 15th of July. The title of the course was "How to promote environmental education in school?"
 
The main purpose of this course was to deepen the teaching method and knowledge for in-service teachers, and to encourage teachers organizing education interest classes and extracurricular activities in schools. There were 20 primary school and kindergarten teachers attended the course.
