World Biodiversity Day
Exhibition on Rare Plants and Animals

Press Release

The Environment Council organized an exhibition on rare plants and animals in collaboration with the Macao Federation of Trade Unions on 22nd May. The organizers aimed at enriching population's knowledge regarding biodiversity and related issues such as species of wild fauna and flora facing extinction in order to improve the citizens' awareness and take actions to protect environment as well as to promote the sustainable development.

The exhibition took place at Campo dos Operários on 22nd may from 15:00 to 20:00 as well as from 23rd to 28th May from 9:00 to 20:00. It focused on numerous rare plants and animal species such as the panda bear, Chinese crocodile (alligator sinensis), Koala, bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), carnivorous plants, "embondeiro" tree (adansonia digitata), ginko and "sequois" (Sequoia sempervirens).

Visitors felt deeply attracted to these beautiful species of fauna and flora and disliked those who hunt predatorily these animals and cut down the trees merely for economic reasons and at the same time felt an huge respect to those who dedicate to their conservation.

Biological diversity is the result after millions of years' evolution of creatures on Earth and the survival of mankind depends on the available food and raw materials; hence it is fundamental that development is carried out in a sustainable way. Protecting biological resources is thus an urgent matter.

Human being has considerable been working towards the maintenance of the ecosystem by combating, limiting over exploitation and control pollution, researching, developing or introducing other technologies and improving civic society. Otherwise, when some of the rare species do disappear we will loose their beauty and even our survival will be threatened.
