Authorities Committed to Awareness on Water Conservation

     "Coping with water scarcity" is the United Nations' topic World Water Day of this year. This topic sets apart the growing significance of water scarcity worldwide and arouses the need for raising integration and cooperation among various regions so as to guarantee a sustainable, efficient management of water resources, on the local and international level.

     The United Nations General Assembly declared, in 1993, the World Water Day on 22^nd of March in order to arouse world's attention to water crisis as well as to define a different theme for each year.

     The Promotional Team for Water Conservation formed by the Environment Council, Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau, Government Information Bureau, and The Macao Water Supply Company, Ltd., is holding a series of activities such as a photograph exhibition and a carnival "Water for Life" aiming at educating new generations on the importance of conserving and consuming water in an efficient manner.

     The exhibition of photographs "Water for Life" is integrated in the commemoration of the World Water Day, and is held at different districts and schools of Macao, from March to April. 30 exhibited panels cover rich topics, such as: the importance of water resources; situation of water sources; worldwide water situation; water crisis; causes and effects, the history of potable water in Macao; the problem of coastal water in Macao; works on the protection of water resources; and information about the actions to save water.

     The Promotional Team for Water Conservation Carnival of "World Water Day - Water for Life" was held on the 18^th of March, which comprises various activities: games; information desks, ways for saving water; photograph and exhibition such as several mock-up of Wallace Fountain, wastewater treatment plant, and a mobile laboratory for carrying out analysis for water quality. With regard to the recreational activities on stage, there were thematic plays, dances, singing, Question and Answer, contests and lucky draws.

     Hong Kong artist, Ms. Cindy Au, has been invited so as to raise population's awareness towards to the importance of conserving water, in a relax atmosphere.

     In addition, a visit to the water source in Zhuhai was organized aiming at knowing the situation of water supply to Macao in March. Likewise, it was expected that citizens, through this visit to the premises, had a better cognition about how valuable "a glass of drinking water".

     The Promotional Team for Water Conservation will keep presenting to population, through various activities, the water-humans relationship in order to arouse the populations' awareness on the importance of using water efficiently.
