Water Saving Tips
For the benefit of our posterity, we should take action to conserve water immediately. Some tips on water conservation are provided below.
Saving Water in Washing Clothes
- Only use the washing machine when there is a full load.
- Wash clothes by hand when there is only a small amount of laundry.
- Do not overuse detergents; otherwise, you would waste a lot of water.
- Collect the soapy water after washing clothes, you can reuse it for floor cleaning or toilet flushing.
- Adjust the time for washing clothes based on their materials.
- Use a water efficient washing machine. Before washing clothes, soak them in water and spin-dry them first, you can save water and the washing time.
Saving Water in the Kitchen
- After rinsing rice, reuse the water for dish washing. The rice rinsing water is a natural and environmental friendly detergent.
- Fill the sink with water when washing dishes and vegetables. Avoid washing them under running water from the tap.
- Wipe the grease from cookers and dishes with tissue paper before washing them. You can save water and detergents.
- Defrost food in the microwave oven or take the food out from the refrigerator the night before. Avoid defrosting food under running water from the tap.
- Only use the dishwasher when there is a full load.
Saving Water in the Toilet
- After rinsing vegetables and rice, washing clothes or taking a shower, reuse the water for toilet flushing.
- Use a water efficient toilet with both high-volume and low-volume flushes for different needs, or use a toilet with an automatic flushing device and adjust the flushing water to a minimum required level.
- If your toilet tank is too big, install a displacement device such as a bottle of water to cut down on the amount of water needed for each flush. Be sure there is no leaks in toilet tank , otherwise, repair them as soon as possible.
Saving Water in the Bathroom
- Use a glass or basin with water when brushing teeth, and washing face and hands.
- Use adjustable or conservative device to avoid overflow showerheads and taps.
- Use a bucket to collect the cold water flowing out before the hot water, and then reuse it for toilet flushing.
- Take showers instead of baths. Use a water efficient showerhead and take a quick shower for under 5 minutes.
- Avoid taking long showers. Turn off the tap while soaping your body.
- When several people take showers, take turns continuously, which will save cold water in between.
Saving Water in Watering Plants
- Water the plants when sunlight is weak. You can save water by reducing moisture evaporation.
- When gardening, choose drought-resistant plants. Separate the plants based on the amount of water they need and irrigate them separately.
- Cover the garden with grass, bark, sawdust or gravel to reduce water evaporation.
- It is suggested to use water in multiple ways to save freshwater, for instance, using water for breeding fish to water flowers.
Others
- Collect and reuse the water drained from dehumidifiers and water purifiers.
- Follow the principle of using water wisely. Remember to turn the tap off after using it.
- Leaking pipes and dripping taps cause the loss of much water. Take action and fix it now!
- Teach children to save water.
- Install water efficient toilet tanks in new houses.
- Check water storage tanks and pipes for leaks regularly.
- Inform related departments to fix leaking pipes.
- Use a trigger operated nozzle on a bucket and a sponge to wash your car. Only wash your car once a month.
